Thyroid Disease is an inflammatory Disease! You need to remember this at all times! Anything you can do to mitigate further inflammation will result in fewer symptoms and side effects in general. Personally I find that inflammatory foods cause anxiety and panic attacks for me, so keeping on top of this is important.
Inflammation is what gives thyroid sufferers some of the more uncomfortable and painful symptoms such as bursitis, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, and aching joints.
The first thing that is within your control is the food you put into your own mouth! A great deal of relief can be earned just by eating anti-inflammatory foods and avoiding inflammatory foods.
Now there is only one exception in the bottom list that will change these foods from anti-inflammatory to inflammatory foods and that is if you have an intolerance or allergy to an item on the list. That will immediately cause inflammation no matter what the food is. So knowing any intolerances is a great step towards good health.
Gluten / Wheat / Refined Grains
Animal Fats and Meats (except fish)
Alcohol and Coffee
High Omega 6 Oils (polyunsaturated Veg oils)
MSG & Food Additives
Berries & Cherries
Celery & Celery Seeds
Dark Green Veggies
Sweet Potatoes & Capsicums
Flaxseeds & Flaxseed oil
Ginger & Turmeric & Cayenne Pepper
Beetroot & Tomatoes
Garlic & Onions
Kelp & Fatty Fish
There is a difference between intolerance and allergy. Intolerances change over your lifetime depending on your level of health, nutritional status, and environmental exposure. An intolerance can simply make you feel off-color, cause headaches, and stop you from achieving health goals. Allergies, on the other hand, are a lot more serious and tend to require immediate intervention.
The standard tests for allergies, such as RASP testing or prick testing may not show up for intolerances. There are now widespread blood test panels and also Hair Analysis testing for a wide variety of foods and environmental bacteria that can give you a more specific answer.
Another option is to simply remove foods or bacteria one at a time till you find your culprit. Remember when you do this you may not be looking for a standard allergen such as wheat, dairy, eggs, nuts, etc. It could be something as simple as lettuce or beef causing the issue. So be open-minded while you track down your specific inflammatory foods list.
In the meantime, use the above Inflammatory foods list and start adjusting your diet to be bottom-heavy!!
